Welcome to the Solid Minerals Machinery and Equipment Development Institute (SOMMEDI), Nasarawa.

As a specialised institute of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), SOMMEDI is committed to advancing Nigeria’s solid minerals sector through innovation, research and development, technology commercialisation, equipment fabrication, skills development, and strategic partnerships. We develop indigenous mining and mineral processing technologies to support value addition, local content, job creation, and sustainable industrial growth. We are deliberate with Creation, Collaboration, and Commercialisation in line with NASENI’s strategy to transform Nigeria from an import-dependent nation into a localised industrial economy

Nigeria is richly endowed with vast mineral resources.  However, unlocking the full economic value of these resources requires modern technologies, efficient processing systems, skilled manpower, reliable data, and strong collaboration among government, industry, academia, and development partners. At SOMMEDI, we’re poised to close these gaps by delivering practical solutions that boost mining productivity, improve mineral beneficiation, support environmental sustainability, and strengthen investment attractiveness.

Our vision is to position Nigeria as a leader in mining technology innovation and mineral-based industrialisation in Africa. Through research-driven interventions, equipment development, capacity building programmes, and support for artisanal and small-scale miners, we are contributing to the transformation of the mining sector from a predominantly extractive industry into a catalyst for industrial development and economic prosperity.
